What to Wear : Class Reunion

Question
Hi - I have my 30th class reunion coming up next month and we put casual dress on the invitation.  I want to wear jeans w/heel (thinking of peep toe type heel) and a nice dressy top.  I have dark brown hair and eyes and I'm 5'5" and even though I have a small waist I tend to be bigger through the hip and thigh area.  I was thinking of a longer type of top that doesn't hug my butt belted but then I don't know if that makes my hips look bigger because my waist is smaller.  Now mind you - when I graduated HS I was way too thin and I weighed 190 at my 25th class reunion which was 5 years ago.  So, I am 20lbs heavier since my 25th class reunion  :(  I really want to look nice and stylish - can you help!!
thank you!!!

Answer
Hi Trudi,
First  of all, even though jeans  are  casual,  remember they WILL make your hips and  thighs look bigger. It has to do with the cut and all the extra detail and stitching on them. But I do  understand that everyone wears jeans, so.....

As  far  as  your top, you can  wear a longer  top. But in order  to minimize your hips,  be sure to choose a top that is the same color as your pants. SO if you are wearing dark blue jeans, choose a dark blue top etc...I know this may sound boring but it will do your figure good, it slims and camoflages any imperfections. Your heels will make a fine statement, and so will your jewelry. You might want to choose a pair of really big earrings for extra  pizzazz.

Let me know how you put it all together! Have fun at your 30th.

Ask Gigi : Choosing a Wedding Dress

Question

Hi Gigi,
I am going to be getting married in the fall. I have your typical hourglass figure, w/ some slight baby bulge in the middle. My favorite type of dress is strapless but I don't like showing my arms. I have that weird little roll where my arm connects to my chest (I call it arm pit fat). Do you have any suggestions on what the best type of dress for someone w/ a fuller hour glass
shape figure is? Thanks!-Chai

Answer:
Hello Chai,
There are so many styles to choose from, I am sure we can find something perfect for you. I will need a little more time to do a search and find a dress that will help you look great and feel great on your special day.

I will be researching at my own website, natch, at www.shop4prom.com which has a huge dress directory...perhaps you will want to take a look at the directory also and see if you find something you like.

-Follow Up-

Hi Chai,
I think I found the perfect solution for your dilemma.  I found this Faviana Wedding Gown from eDressMe. (I like their site because they sell mostly dresses and I can purchase dresses for almost any occasion!)

This dress has the strapless 'look' yet at the same time the lace sleeves will actually camouflage the baby fat your arms!  You also get the benefit of wearing a dress that is almost identical to Kate Middleton's! Who wouldn't want to be a princess on her wedding day?

Best wishes for a wonderful wedding day!

Ask Gigi : Wedding Guest Attire

Question
I am a guest at a wedding next month.  I just bought a dress I fell in love with, but I am not very good at accessorizing, and would love some help!  The dress is a halter, and is a criss-cross v-neck, kind of low cut.  The top half is black and form-fitting.  The bottom half is several different colors: champagne (looks like a mix between light gold and silver), pale yellow, black, and white.  It is silk and is more "flowy," for lack of a better word.  It is different lengths, from just below the knee to tea-length.  I love to wear silver jewelry, but I just don't know what kind to wear.  I'm told no necklace with a halter - is this really true?  Even with low-cut halters?  I was wondering if a short necklace would be ok, and also what kind of earrings and bracelet I should wear.  My hair is just barely past shoulder length, and dark brown, and I was thinking of wearing it half-up, half-down somehow.  Lastly, shoes?  I have black, thin strappy shoes, heel is about 1 inch.  Would these be ok or should I wear a different type?  Thanks in advance!

Answer
Well, I think in this case the black sandals will be great, since the dress is black on top.

And your earrings should be simple and pick up the colors in your dress! Nothing too cluttery. Without seeing your dress, I would have to agree with the others about necklaces with your halter. In effect a halter dress is its own accessory, in that it is accentuating your shoulders and bringing attention to your face and hair. I would avoid anything to ruin the effect. As for your hair, why not pin up the sides and let the back hang down for a cool chic dressy look. No need to overdo it!

Ask Gigi : What jewelry to wear with gown

Question from Julia C.
Dear Gigi,
I am the Mother of the Groom and have a formal, long dark green gown with a beaded top of green, teal, and a few bronze bugle beads. I will probably shorten it to ankle length. Bronze sandals seem to look best but I don't know what color jewelry (necklace/earrings/bracelet)to wear with bronze sandals. Since the top has a lot of beading do I need to worry about that clashing with the jewelry? I also purchased a bronze fabric clutch with a cover made of bronze bugle beads but don't know if this was a good choice. Please help! Thanks so very much.

Answer:
Your dress sounds fabulous! You are right to be concerned about clashing with the beading on your dress, you want to avoid looking too cluttered. Your main goal would be to keep the attention to your facial area, and you will need earrings to draw the eye back up from the beautiful beading of your dress to your eyes. Your best option would be to wear earrings in the same colors as your dress so as to keep the continuity of the colors. This may be harder to find but worth the effort in the long run.

But your 2nd option would be to purchase dark green gemstone drop earrings in a bronze or gold setting, like the ones Angelina Jolie wore to the Oscars! Make sure the green gemstone matches your dress perfectly. And they should be at least 3 inches long, remember you have a lot going on in your dress and you need to balance it out by drawing the eye upward. I don't see any reason to wear additional jewelry, the earrings will be just the right accessory.

Best wishes

Lindsey, your Zebra dress WILL POP, just because it is a Zebra dress.
The contrast will draw all eyes to you.

What you need to think abuot is your jewelry and other accessories. Be sure to wear really BOLD earrings, nothing too small, or they will look wimpy.

Check out the hairstyles gallery at Shop4prom.com

Depending on your face shape and hair texture, you can choose an updo which will make you look really sophisticated or wear your hair down arond your shoulders. But the updo will really show off your dress and make  you look like a celebrity.

What to Wear : Musical Contest

Question
I need to dress up for a junior high music contest. I have three solos that I will be doing so I need to look alright for them. I know that the more info you have, the easier it will be to answer my question, so I'll give you some background.

I am a 13 year old girl in th 8th grade. I am quite pale, like I'm the lightest shade of face powder you will find. I have naturally blonde hair that has some natural red tones (i used to have red hair when i was little, but it turned blonde). I have dark green/blue/gray-green eyes and long light eyelashes. I have some skin problems, so I always wear a powder on my face. I also have fullish lips which I think are very pretty and naturally dark pinkish. I also have braces, on top and bottom teeth, if that means anything to you. My height is 5'4" and I weigh about 130 pounds, I don't really have any problem areas except my thighs, which doesn't matter because I'm wearing a dress.

The dress I'm wearing is black with black lace netting over it. The lace on top has darker black polka dots. The sleeves are sort of like a tank top but is made only out of lace and the normal dress fabric part of it starts at a "strapless" level I guess. The top part is fitted and has ruching on it under the lace and has a black ribbon that goes around a little under my waist. It goes to right below my knees and has more lace at the bottom to make it poof out a little, so it's an A-line dress. I'm wearing 2 and a half to 3 inch black heels that are really simple with it, a biggish clear crystal and silver ring (one big stone in the center with a silver color band around it), small dangly earrings that have black beads on them, and a 3-strand fake pearl bracelet with little seperater things that keep the strands together with small crystal rhinestone things on them. Mostly just simple accesories.

omg i know this is reeeaaally long but I just have a little bit left. If you could help me decide on makeup that would be helpful. I usually wear face powder, brown-black mascara (a couple of coats to make my eyelashes dark and full at the roots), not a lot of eyeliner (and I usually change the color every day), and sometimes lip gloss or a little bit of lipstick. Do you think I should maybe wear reddish lipstick and just mascara with a little bit of silvery shimmery eyeshadow, or should I make my eyes smoky-ish and shimmery and not do anything with my lips exept maybe a little bit of clear gloss? I'm not hoping to look super-vampy or glamorous, and I'm not going for the goth look, so I'm going to try not to wear to much black or dramatic makeup.

One of my solos is a French Horn solo, so I'll have to wipe off any lipstick or lipgloss and re-apply later. Also, do you think my outfit sounds all right? not to black or depressing, I hoped it looked classy.

Answer
Hi Lizzy,
First of all I want to commend you on your excellent use of the English language! I am very happy to receive letters with so much information and which is also clearly explained.

So you've picked our your dress and accessories, they all sound lovely, nicely chosen and classy. Simple and elegant is always right.

As for your makeup, I like the idea of making your eyes smoky, and eliminating your lipstick totally until after the concert. That way you won't have to worry about re-applying lipstick all evening! You really do want to concentrate on your performance, instead. I am assuming you will be up on stage? If so, I think it will be impossible for most people in the audience to see whether or not you have lipstick on. Perhaps, if a photo is taken, dab a bit of gloss on at that time.

And may I suggest, that now you are going through puberty and your skin is acting up: try sprinkling a bit of baking soda on your hand, mix with your facial soap (cetaphil works great) and gently wash  your face, then rinse. This will help keep cleaning away the dead skin that can cause breakouts~ it is gentle and inexpensive, too!

Best wishes at your concert, hope you win!

What to Wear : Light Skintone Black Hair

Question
what color would look best on me?
Hi my names ashleigh. i am 16 years old and was just wondering which color would suit me best. My natural hair color is medium brown, But i have currently died it black, i am medium to light skinned. I usually wear boring colors such as black but i am not a Goth.
Answer

Hi Ashleigh
Thank you for your question.
The trick with colour is
1. find the colours that suit you best
2. build a wardrobe around your 2 or 3 favorites.

For instance, with your current hair color, you do look good in black but there is no reason wear all black. White and black are good choices for your basic colors.

Do you have a favorite color? Let's say its pink.
Not just any pink. Your best pink should be bold and bright like magenta.

So your wardrobe could have
black pants, shorts or skirts
white pants, shorts or skirts.
lots of white tops in different styles, casual, clubwear, etc.
lots of tops in pink, and or black

Now your pink/magenta will be your accent color to jazz it up a bit.
How about black shorts, white top and magenta tennis shoes for casual?

Or white skirt, magenta top and white sandals and a magenta and black totebag that you can wear with anything in your new wardrobe.

My advice for you is to build on what you already have in your closet, and add pieces to it as you can.

Now be sure to write me if you go back to brown hair. I will have a completly different answer for you!

What to Wear : Classical Concert

Question
Hi,
I will be attending the Andrea Bocelli concert in San Antonio, TX Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 7:30 PM at San Antonio Municipal Auditorium and have NO idea what to wear. I am from Michigan where typically I would be wearing something with a little warmth and my mink coat. I'm sure that's not appropriate for Texas. I have never been to Texas and have no idea what to pack for the days I will be there. Any help greatly appreciated!

Answer
Although I am not an expert in the weather, I do recommend you check out this website. You will find the current weather conditions for San Antonio. As you can see it is still quite warm and your mink would not be at all necessary!

http://www.wunderground.com

I am by no means that familiar with San Antonio, having never been there, so I would look for something in lighter materials. Ideally, you would purchase something that you could actually wear to a similar event in Michigan.

I chose this dress because it can be worn at a cocktail party anywhere, and it is made of a light fabric.

For the rest of your wardrobe, it all really depends upon your activities, but here are a few essentials.Whenever you travel plan to bring basic colors for your clothing. Use your jewelry to add color. This will simplify your packing

Navy slacks
Navy shorts
Off-white or cream shorts
Off-white or cream slacks
Navy T-shirt long sleeve (crew neck)
Navy T-shirt short sleeve
White t-shirt short sleeve
White T-shirt long sleeve (crew neck)
White Sweater (just in case)
Cream and beige striped shirt
Navy and white print shirt
Light brown walking shoes
White tennis shoes, if you wish.
Black heels
Simple Gold earrings and bracelet for day
Fancy Gold earrings and bracelet for night
Bring an umbrella!

As you can see, this suitcase would contain basic colors that mix and match. Most of the outfits would be casual, except for the dress.

Here's a tip. Wearing all one color makes your outfit dressier looking. For example, during the day, wear your white short sleeved t-shirt with your navy slacks for a casual look. At night wear your white long sleeved t-shirt and white slacks and fancy gold earrings for a slight dressier look. It will create the illusion of elegance even though you are wearing a t-shirt.

I hope this helps answer your question. Please let me know what you think. I have tried to give you some basic idea of how to pack and this should give you a good idea of to pack for all your future trips, anywhere in the world.

1. Weather
2. Basic styles, basic colors

Have a greaaaaaaaaaaaaat time!

Navy blue pant suit
Hi Joanne,
I do understand about that budget thing, gets in the way of our preferred lifestyle, doesn't it?

My suggestion to you would be to find one of those stores that sell nice clothes for less, in our area we have one called Ross, Dress for less.

At this point in your life, approaching adulthood, you will want to invest in your wardrobe to match your expanding experiences. This will not be the last time you need to wear a dressy outfit, so you will want to start acquiring these essentials now. Buy as high of quality as you can scrape together, so it lasts for years rather than months. Remember you are investing in yourself for a good long time!

Look for a pantsuit in a neutral color that suits your haircoloring and eyecoloring. A simple way to choose is to match your haircolor, black or dark blue suit with black hair, cocoa with brown hair, tan with blonde hair etc. (Go to shop4prom.com for advice on choosing your perfect colors for makeup!). By purchasing your pantsuit in a neutral color, you can wear it to many different occasions and use inexpensive jewelry to change the look. Its cheaper than buying a new outfit for every occasion.

Look for a basic, classic style, something that will look good for years to come.

Next you want to make sure it is a good fit for your body type. Being short and chubby, you want to wear something in one color only, to elongate your body. Simple lines,no belts or bulky accessories.

Finally, I've chosen a pant suit because you   don't like dresses. Just remember, you need your pant suit to look dressy, by choosing a dressy, softer material and by accessorising it correctly.

I have included a photo to help you get the idea, you can add just a simple pair of earrings and be ready to go.

Please tell me what you think!

What to Wear : Night Time Wedding

Question
I will be attending a wedding on a Friday evening and I have purchased a grey and black 2 piece outfit. The skirt comes just below the knee. My shoes are closed toe, a soft purple suede. What color pantyhose would look best with this outfit?
thank you for your help,
Doreen

Answer
Hi Doreen
You need to go with a pantyhose color that is the same color as the grey in your suit. What you want to do is create a continuous illusion of the same color from top to bottom.

You could try a grey or an off-black, depending on the color or your skirt.

Try this and let me know what you think.

What to Wear : 21st birthday party

Question
Hello, I have 21st birthday party to attend, I have got a red velvet dress to wear that sits just below the knee, I rarely get dressed up and I am unsure what sort of shoes to wear and unsure to go for a red or black pair. I am 5'3 and a uk size 12

Answer
Hi Anna,
Thank you for your question.

Personally, I prefer matching shoes to the dress. BUT from my experience, red will be quite difficult to match. If you can match them properly, then the red will be perfect. While you are out shopping, bring your dress with you so can hold up your shoe against the fabric of your dress. Wear nude hose with red shoes. Wear neutral jewelry and accessories with this combination. No more red is necessary.

Black, of course, is a nice alternative. Black looks best with deep reds, ruby red, or claret. Also if your hair is black, go with black shoes. Your hair is part of your outfit, too! Wear black hose with black shoes.

If the color of your dress is more of an apple red or tomato red,  you should consider a shoe in a brown tone, such as chocolate or even nude. If your hair is blonde, go with the nude. If your hair is brown, go with a chocolate or tan shoe.

In addition, to shoe color, you will want to match your accessories to your hair color: gold, silver, pearls etc., with blonde hair, bronze or copper colors with brown hair, and black jewelry if you have black hair. If you are wearing a dress with a lot of color, you want to avoid wearing red accessories, as it can be a bit overwhelming.

So as an example, let's say you have brown hair.
My choice would be:
Red dress
Bronze jewelry and clutch
Tan or cocoa shoes (suede)

I am including a picture of a top with the color I would choose for this ensemble.

Let me know what you think! Also feel free to resend your question with your actual hair color and I will analyse it with your red dress!

What to Wear : Shoes with Navy Blue

Question
I bought a sheath-type dress, very form fitting, with a deep v-neck front and back. It comes to the knee and is a navy blue stretchy satin material.  I don't know what color shoes and jewelry to wear.  I have platinum sandals, black peep-toe slingbacks and gold sandals at home.  I am looking for help!  I'm blonde, if that makes a difference.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Maria,
I think you should wear either the platiunum or gold sandals if they will be warm enough in your location, that is.

Your actual  haircolor will be the clincher in this decision. Match your shoes and accessories to the color of your hair, so if your hair is golden blonde go with the gold shoes and if it is ash or baby blonde, go with the platinum.

The reason for this is simple. The fewer colors you wear in an outfit, the more formal you will look. You do want to look dressy, elegant and formal for the wedding. If you go with all one color for your accessories, you will be maximizing your elegance quotient: simple classy and elegant.

Please let  me know if you have any more questions.  Your dress sound absolutely beautiful! Go with a large gold or platinum earring, like a chandelier for the greatest effect!

What to Wear : Panic at the Disco

Question
Hello!
Please help! I'm going to see Panic At the Disco soon *Google them if you are unsure of who they are* And I have no idea what to put on. I was thinking you know something dressy but gigs are hot and stuff. What could I put together with this top http://www.asos.com/Chloe-Sevigny/Asos/Eye-Print-Vest/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=2...
Thankyou!

Answer
Yeah, that is cool, I like Panic! For your outfit, I would choose these pants, they are striped and would go perfect with your top. If you plan on wearing a jacket over, make sure you add a fabric rose. A floppy hat would be fun.copy and paste this link into your browser.

What to Wear : Strapless Dress

Question
Hello! I just bought a strapless dress for my prom and right now the hem falls past the back of my kness. I am a short person, 5'3, and heard that any dress or skirt I buy should hit just below the knee or just at the knee.

Should I go get my dress shortened?

Also, is it ok to wear a necklace AND earrings with a strapless dress?

Thanks,

Marie

Answer
Hi Katie,
Yes, anytime you buy a dress off the rack, it may not fit you perfectly, especially the length. Your clothes should fit perfectly and when they do you will look perfect too!

Have your dress shortened to fit your height, and while you are there, have the tailor make sure parts of the dress are fitting well also. Make sure the armhole is not too large. It should fit snugly against your body.

As for the accessories: Formal events allow you to wear things you might not wear during the day. The general rule is: if the dress is simple, you can wear fancy shoes and earrings and necklace and a fancy hairstyle and makeup and nailpolish!

If you are wearing a dress with ruffles and lace or sequins, you can wear all the above, except instead of fancy shoes, keep your shoes and your hairstyle simple. Take this quiz to see how you score: http://shop4prom.com/prom_accessories02.asp

Hope this helps. Have a great prom

What to Wear : Summer Formal Wedding

QUESTION:
We are invited to a wedding and the invitation said "summer formal. What should my husband and I wear for that occasion?

ANSWER:
Hi, N. ...when I hear wedding I hear formal or semi-formal. Typically if the wedding is during the day (before 5pm) one could wear a long flowery gown ( as long as it doesn't remind one of hawaiian mu-mu) or a below the knee chiffon number. By all means, stay away from dresses that although dressy, still say "cocktail party" which would include tight mini-skirts with ample cleavage showing. Think of an afternoon wedding as 'tea with the queen'. A night time formal wedding is , well more formal. Long dresses are essential, whether strapless or with spaghetti straps, they need to exude elegance and grace.

THE LOOK
I've create a set of looks for you and hope it gives you some inspiration! As for the hubby, if the wedding is indoors and air-conditioned, he should wear a grey or navy suit, does not have to be a three piece, but it must be well-made and a perfect fit. The shirt should be the classic white dress shirt. The tie could pick up some of the color of your dress, for that touch of celebration. Include a colorful hanky.

Style on!

Ask Gigi : What color shoes??

Question from Julie B.
hi my graduation party is on June 5, i have this really short and strapless dress to wear but i don't know what color of shoes should i get for it? my dress is electric blue, i am very white skinned, and have long legs. i cant decide between black, blue or silver high heels. open or closed shoes?

Answer:
Your best choice would be a blue that matches the dress. The black would be ok, but only if the party was in the evening. The best way to match your dress would do buy shoes that were 'dyeable', this is done professionally, don't try it yourself!

A really pretty option otherwise is a shoe that is the color of champagne, halfway between silver and beige. It will be much easier to match your jewelry with the shoes if they are a neutral color.

As for the type of shoe, the general rule is: go with the open toe shoes since you live in a warm climate.

Congratulations on your awesome achievement!

What To Wear to the Opera

Question
Hello. I am going to be attending an opera and I have no idea what I should wear to one since I have never been before. Could you please give me a little advice?

Answer
Hi Stefanie
Lucky you. Opera. mmmm.la la la la!

The opera crowd has a culture all its own, traditional and dressy. No jeans or cotton of course. Many women like to wear their formal wear but it is not necessary or common any more.

What you want to wear is something elegant and conservative. No skimpy cocktail dresses or short skirts. Think about what you would wear to a wedding. I found the perfect dress at Coldwater Creek, they even have earrings to match and also a shawl in the exact color of brown. This is just an example of what I mean about elegant.

What do you think?

Just go to Coldwatercreek.com and put in H43494 to the search engine to see the dress.

At the bottom of the page you will see some strappy heels in brown. And here is the code to put in for the wrap H91060 and here are some lovely earrings H74324 and of course your bag H91304

Hope this information helps you choose just the right outfit for the occasion.

What Color Accessories Should I Wear ?

Question
I'm wearing a green dress with small white poke  dots. What color shoes should I wear and jewelry.

Answer
Hi Sue
Your dress sounds very pretty.

It really depends on when the wedding is.  If you will attend the wedding in the summer, I would say by all means wear white pumps and pearl earrings and bracelet.

If your dress is a medium green and if it will be in the spring when it might still be a bit chilly, I would buy a nice pair of heels in a tan color, like the color of the wood in a pencil. That should make it neutral enough for the dress. Be sure to take your dress with you shoe shopping. It is tricky to choose colors without seeing the actual color. If it so happens that the dress is a darker green, look for a tan shoe that is as dark as the dress. If by chance there is any gold accent on the shoe, then match your jewelry that: gold and pearls can work, also.

I hope this helps you find your perfect shoe!

Should I wear Gold And Burgundy?

Question
My prom is coming up in May, and I already have this amazing dress. It's a burgundy halter thats about knee length. I'm used to being bold, as I am 5"1, 42DD, and around 180 lbs.. But I will not ever be so bold that I'm tacky. Thats the thing, though! With my accessories for the dress, I want to wear gold with the burgundy, but is that too much?

Am I finally going...overboard?!

ANSWER: Hi Cassandra,
Your dress sounds lovely. My feeling about prom or any formal event really is heck yeah, go for the gold. Where else will you get to dress up to this extent? My question is: will it be enough? By that I mean, plain gold? Why not find some fabulous earrings with gold AND some kind of gemstone, fakes ok, but it should be ruby or garnet.

The reason you can up the voltage, so to speak, is you will be in a room full of people and the lights will be low. Wearing little pearl studs won't even cut it, you need to ramp it up a little. That goes for your makeup too. What looks gross during the day looks great in a dimly lit room. By the way, whatcha gonna do with your hair?

Have fun and don't worry, sounds like you hit the mark.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: GG Flower,

In response, I have a totally chic chin grazing (which gradually gets shorter as it goes back) pixie cut and I'm just going to keep it simple and amp it up, get a little volume in it, and sweep the bangs over to the side. Is that advisable or should I consider other options? For example, growing it out and doing an updo? My makeup probably will be focusing on the eyes, and lightening in intensity as I go to the cheeks, lips, ect.

Answer
I personally think that wearing your hair as you normally would with a little volume and sweep of the bangs is a great idea! You know what your hair will and won't do and if you play around with it now you won't come across any mishaps later. Growing your hair out and experimenting with new styles close to the time of your prom will be stressful. Stress you don't need.
It sounds like you are set and I like the way you plan to accentuate the eyes rather than trying to overdo it. Now those earrings on the other hand, can be bold and big and dramatic and they will look just right.
Hope this helps!
